January 30 – March 27
The Fourth Wall is pleased to present Home From Home, a solo show of recent paintings by Bay Area artist, Sydney Cohen. Sydney’s primary languages are color and material. She has the remarkable ability to give acrylic paint and pigment a physical, almost sculptural, presence. Her current work, much of it done in the last year while sheltering in place, consists of countless spheres. These don’t appear to be painted directly but are formed as paint fills the ground around them, one layer of color after another. What is left are small gaps, which contain a visible history of her process in the traces of colors left behind. The edges between shape and ground (which is which?) appear unstable as the colors interact with to one another.
"There is space between atoms but we perceive things as being solid even though on a microscopic level they are not. Everything is permeable and getting to play with that by having the layers is really interesting." – Sydney Cohen from upcoming catalog
Sydney Cohen lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area.
